Stat of the week: With a Red List Index score of 0.87, American Samoa has the highest score in the region

Celebrating Pacific biodiversity, our stat of the week marks World Environment Day this 5 June. 

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List Index ranges from 0 to 1—with 1 indicating no extinction risk, and 0 meaning that all species are extinct.

  • American Samoa: 0.87 – Best score in the region, with no current extinction risk.
  • Tokelau: 0.85 – Very low extinction risk, showing healthy biodiversity.
  • Wallis and Futuna: 0.84 – Minimal extinction risk, indicating strong biodiversity.

Protecting biodiversity is essential for the resilience of ecosystems and the well-being of communities in the Pacific.
