Pacific tuna and billfish stock assessment results now on Pacific Data Hub
The Pacific Data Hub now hosts key fisheries stock assessment results for tuna and billfish species across the Pacific Ocean—a step forward for open data and fisheries science in the region.
The new dataflow on the Pacific Data Hub presents outputs from the stock assessment modelling of tuna species—albacore, bigeye, skipjack and yellowfin—and billfish, including striped marlin and swordfish, covering the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
The initiative was led jointly by SPC’s Statistics for Development and Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems divisions. Recognising the opportunity to make these critical data more discoverable and usable, the collaboration has surfaced existing stock assessment outputs in the Pacific Data Hub’s .Stat Explorer.
While fisheries scientists have long shared stock assessment data via GitHub, the Pacific Data Hub makes this information much more accessible to a broad audience—including those in policymaking, research, and the wider public.
The result: fisheries data that can now be browsed and analysed alongside datasets on the environment, economy and more. Data can be viewed or downloaded in a range of everyday formats like Excel, or—for advanced users—called via API for use in apps, spreadsheets or dashboards. .Stat Explorer’s interactive charts allow users to quickly explore trends and trajectories.
The new dataflow was officially launched at the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) Scientific Committee meeting in Tonga, with further updates planned later as the latest stock assessment results become available. Work continues to improve coverage and metadata.
