Vanuatu’s preparedness for disaster and climate change: An experiment in data science
One of the world’s most disaster-prone nations, the Republic of Vanuatu has executed an innovative experiment that seeks to improve its climate resilience through data science, supported by the Pacific Community (SPC) and World Bank.
The Vanuatu Bureau of Statistics is leading the development of a set of integrated tools designed to improve government decision-making in the face of climate change and natural disasters, supported by SPC’s experts in statistics, data and project innovation, and funded by the World Bank.
Built entirely with open-source software, the initiative ‘Vanuatu Data Science Driving Innovation in Climate Change and Natural Disasters’ is one of several ‘innovative experiments’ as part of the PACSTAT project, fostering statistical innovation and capacity-building in the Pacific Islands.
